New Cells
Robert Moore
New cells maintain a readiness to read
Internal information that they need.
Instructions cross a membrane and define
The details of a small assembly line.
The handiwork to set a part in place
Is done with little thought about the pace
Of synthesis until supplies run low.
Cells carry out directives till they know
It’s time to end their final phase and split.
Recycled parts are stored until they fit
In structures that can serve a later cell.
The chance that they’ll be used again is, well,
As certain as the song a warbler sings.
So goes the constancy of living things.
