A Loverīs Dream

J. R. Corbin

A deep New England winter blows
On twisting winds which stress the trees,
And brings the ponds and lakes to freeze,
As autumn falls upon its knees,
And spins to where all nothing grows.

She warms to lamplight in the night,
She gathers it, so sheltered there,
The gentle glow shines golden hair,
As nightly shadows fill the air,
And evening’s haze gives up the fight.

She gazes through a frostbit pane,
Where racing snow falls happenstance,
And watches as the wintry dance
Begins to build its cold romance.
Soon, time is standing still again.

If only for a momentīs dream,
To softly close long opened eyes,
And ride upon rose velvet skies,
To where her gentle lover lies
And waits, with heart and soul serene.

Then, as her breath spends frozen air,
She finds a way to fly to him,
To tie the strings so binding them,
She brings her kiss to nourish him,
And sings her song to ease his care.

The lovers seam their souls as one,
He sleeps then, in her warm embrace,
For just a while she rests her chase,
And weeps when his lips brush her face,
Then as the rush of wind, he’s gone.
