Knowing your carbon footprint is about knowing how much energy and pollution your daily activities cause to affect the Earth. If each of us watches over our carbon footprint numbers, together we can help make our world a cleaner, healthier place to live.
Back a few hundred years ago, living green was not a snazzy new way of approaching life. Living green was simply what people did, all day, every day! Grab a copy of Little House on the Prairie and read how a typical week went. Worn out clothing was reused in new ways. Tiny scraps of paper and wood and fabric were saved and repurposed. Settlers would never dream of leaving candles burning in various rooms, all night long, rather than “turning them off”.
Native Americans were equally aware of the value of every item in their life. When a buffalo was slain, every part of the animal was respectfully put to use, from the meat for eating, to the bones for needles, to the skins for warmth. Nothing was wasted.
The same was true in all regions of the world. Inuit would cherish each component of a walrus they brought into their village. Japanese would save the tiniest of rice grains. Life was about cherishing every item you had.
Now our modern culture is again realizing the wisdom of this way of life. We relish the long term satisfaction in reducing the items we bring into our environment, reusing everything we have, and recycling our excess and waste rather than burying it in the ground.
The first step in any process is to get a sense of where things currently stand. By working on your carbon footprint numbers, you'll have a starting point to know where you can focus your energies.
