CMT geared up for their annual awards show and for Fan Fair too. I just have one question with Kid Rock hosting how do we consider it a country music award show? John Mayer, Snooki and The Situation to name a few that are showing up to perform or to present an award don’t exactly bring to mind country music.

Somewhere along the line CMT quit standing for Country Music Television. Maybe it was between the endless reruns of “Trading Spouses” or “16 and Pregnant”. Videos that used to dominate the airwaves on CMT are almost non existant, why this is a surprise to me I don’t know.

Depending on your opinion the music that is coming out of Nashville may or may not be country but it is what it is and fans of today seem to be more accepting of the cross over artists that are making appearances in the genre. I don’t have an issue with the cross overs for the most part, I do have a problem when they start to show up and host the award shows. Don’t get me wrong, I know that country music fans are the best in the world and will give anyone a chance, but at some point don’t we need to draw the line?

When the show opened Kid Rock was there to sing and in no way was that considered country. I can handle and accept southern rock, it didn’t fall in that category for me either. That Martina McBride, Jamey Johnson, Trace Adkins, Kellie Pickler and Hank Williams Jr. were up there with him did nothing to make it feel country to me. Maybe it was wishful thinking on my part, but when the camera panned to Brad Paisley he seemed to be sitting there in shock about what he was seeing too.

Lady Antebellum, Blake Shelton, Trace Adkins, Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, Keith Urban and Brooks & Dunn were the big winners of the night with Carrie taking the Video of the Year award to go along with her CMT Performance of the Year award.

I can’t help but walk away from the show with a sinking feeling that during this cycle country music is going to be something that we don’t recognize. Those that have complained up to now about the Shania Twains, Carrie Underwoods, Taylor Swifts haven’t seen anything yet. If the way Kid Rock hosted and acted is what we have to look forward to, then county music is in deep trouble in my own opinion.
