Tiananmen Square is the world’s largest public square located in the center of Beijing which is named after the Tiananmen Gate (Gate of Heavenly Peace). The square is known for several events in the history of China but it’s mostly known for the protests of 1989 which ended in June 4 resulting in military supression and death of hundreds or maybe thousands of protestors. Today, June 4, 2013 is the is the 24th anniversary of Tiananmen Square.

Features of the Square

Tiananmen Square was built in 1417 during the Ming Dynasty. The renovation and renaming of the square took place in 1699 during early Qing Dynasty. The square is located in between the two big, ancient gates; Tiananmen on the north and Qianmen on the south. On the west side of the Tiananmen square lies the Great Hall of People while on the east side is National Museum of China.

Tiananmen (Gate of Heavenly Peace) is the symbol of People’s Republic of China. A picture of Chairman Mao is hung on the red stone walls. Over the top, there’s a wooden roof where a menagerie of animals can be seen. These animals are purported there to protect the palace and the inhabitants. The rostrum where Chairman Mao declared the foundation of People’s Republic of China is open to the public.

Places to Visit in Tiananmen Square

The Great Hall of People

This place is also open to the public. It has an auditorium for 10,000 people. Official events such as the National People’s Congress take place here.

China National Museum

This museum opened in 2003. You can witness the entire history of Chinese civilization here.

Qianmen (Front Gate)

Qianmen used to be the main gate for the Emperor to go through when going to attend ceremonies in the Temple of Heaven. It’s also open to the public.

Monument to the People’s Heroes

This 38 meter high monument was built in memory of the citizens who died for the Imperial society.

Zhongshan Park is another place to visit which is located between the Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City.

Another interesting for visitors is the National Flag Raising Ceremony which takes place at dawn everyday.
