My favorite genre of books happens to be travel memoir. There’s nothing quite like getting to experience new and exotic locales through the eyes of another traveler. I’ve shared a few of my favorites below.

The Motion of the Ocean: 1 Small Boat, 2 Average Lovers, and a Woman’s Search for the Meaning of Wife by Janna Cawrse Esary follows the author and her husband on a sailing trip across the Pacific Ocean. Armchair travelers are in for many interesting adventures while Janna and Graeme navigate the open seas in their boat Dragonfly. My favorite aspect of the book is that while we get to read about the places they visit and the people they meet, Janna lets us into her world as she ponders the deeper meaning of she and Graeme’s long-term relationship.

Queen of the Road by Doreen Orion is a funny tale about the author and her husband’s first RV trek around the country in their converted bus. The reason I adore this story so much is because the author and I come from completely different backgrounds so it’s fascinating for me to view an RV trip from this Long Island princess’s perspective.

Little Snowbirds: A Love Story on Wheels by Erin Lehn Floresca is a tale that is near and dear to my heart because I happen to be the author. Little Snowbirds is a funny and poignant memoir that follows me and my then-boyfriend-now-husband, Patrick, on an extended road trip across America. Armchair travelers will not only get a chance to meet the funny characters we encounter along the way, you’ll get a chance to see how we deal with the many obstacles that arise on our road trip adventure.

An Embarrassment of Mangoes by Ann Vanderhoof is a riveting memoir about the author and her husband’s first sailing trip down to the Caribbean. Vanderhoof has a beautiful way with words and her exquisite storytelling skills make you never want the story to end.

Honeymoon with my Brother by Franz Wisner is an engaging tale about a guy whose fiancé calls off their marriage just days before the wedding. Rather than forgo his honeymoon, he and his brother Kurt end up traveling the world for two years. During this escape the brothers bond in a way they never would have otherwise while gaining a new perspective on life. It’s a classic tale of turning tragedy into triumph.

Halfway to Each Other by Susan Pohlman is a lovely tale about second chances. Susan and her husband Tim were headed for a divorce as soon as they got back from their Italy trip. When Susan gets the inspiration to hold off on the divorce and instead plant their family in the Italian Riviera for a year, Tim hops on board with the idea. While becoming international residents proves to be challenging, it creates a family bond that hadn’t existed before. It’s a charming tale about taking chances.
