Dala in Concert
Amanda Walther (DA) and Sheila Carabine (LA) are who make up this acoustic Canadian folk music duo called DALA. Together for 10 years, they have released 5 CD projects, completed a PBS production called "Girls from the North Country", have won several achievement awards and regularly sell out venues for their live performances.
Amanda and Sheila have been close friends and singing partners for better than 10 years. As you observe these vocal phenomenon, the differences between them are apparent. Amanda sings with sweet soprano vocals to match her sweet and delicate persona contrasted with Sheila's alto harmony reflecting her casual, earthy demeanor. Each have pitch perfect voices which blend together in tight harmony. As they sing, they trade lead vocals with ease and bring additional power to the song while harmonizing the key phrases. Beneath the vocals sits Sheila's acoustic guitar strumming out the melody, accompanied by Amanda sometimes on guitar, or glockenspiel and on other pieces the two share the piano.
Prolific song writers, a live DALA show is filled with their self written songs and only a few covers that have been arranged in their own distinctive style. Stylistically, they deliver unique arraignments of their own music as well as the covers they choose to sing. Their music will ignite raw emotions, be it joy, happiness, sadness, or laughter - it's all there ready to melt your heart feelings. Their lyrics are filled with meaningful emotions and are highly poetic.
During a DALA live performance you can feel their passion as they breath emotional depth in the extraordinarily tight harmonies of each piece sung. Such amazing positive energy washes over you as the pure joy of singing shines from their smiles. The music is in these girl's soul and their gift is to give it to you.
Their set list generally will contain their award winning tune Horses which not only carries a haunting melody, but also contains such meaningful lyrics as to resonate with anyone who has ever felt isolated in their life. From their highly diverse discography, you might also hear Marilyn Monroe, Alive, Levi Blues, Girl from North Country, Sunday Dress or many other selections from their repertoire. Other songs might include covers of Both Sides Now, It's a Wonderful World, and a well-combined a cappella arrangement of Fever/Hit the Road Jack.
You can catch a DALA performance at the many coffee houses that feature live music or at many folk festivals. This is a duo that if you love live folk music, seek them out.
