Groundhog Day Movie Review

Groundhog Day Movie Review
Sarcastic weather man Phil Connors (Bill Murray) has to go to Punxsutawney for the Groundhog Day festival. This isn’t a trip that he is looking forward to. In fact, it is the worst day of the year and the worst place to be for him. Although he hates the idea, he is mesmerized by his producer’s, Rita, (Andie MacDowell) beauty as he watches her in the distance. Since she is accompanying him on the trip, it makes things a little more interesting. While they are riding in the truck he complains the entire time. Rita sets him up with a room in a stylish bed and breakfast. The madness begins when he wakes up at six o’clock in the morning. Sonny and Cher’s song, “I Got You Babe,” is ending on the radio. The radio personalities come on and begin to talk about the weather.

He runs into a man in the stairwell who asks him “if it is going to be an early spring.” Then the hostess of the bed and breakfast makes small talk with him. He tells the hostess that he will definitely be checking out of the hotel. Little does he know… Then he runs into Ned Ryerson an old school mate. Ned tries to sell him insurance, but Phil escapes the sale and steps into a puddle of ice water. When he arrives to the festival, the man in the top hat pulls the groundhog from the tree stump. Then it is decided that there will be six more weeks of winter. Rita is so impressed. She wants to know how they do that. As they are leaving the festival to return home, there is a snow storm. The police officer says they are shutting down the road. Since they are stuck in town, Rita and Larry the cameraman (Chris Elliott) invite Phil to dinner, but he turns them down, returning to the bed and breakfast.

In the morning, he wakes up to Groundhog day all over again. He runs into the same people, has the same conversations, and goes to the same places. Arriving at the festival he tells Rita that something strange is happening. Despite his efforts, he wakes back up to the same day.

He brings Rita to the diner to explain the déjà vu he is experiencing. She tells him to seek psychological help, which is another strike against him because she also believes he’s selfish. He has a lot to prove to win her heart. He tries to talk to Rita throughout the movie about his dilemma and his feeling for her. Will he be able to change her hardened heart, and get to experience another day?

I love to watch this movie. Whenever it is on TV, I have to watch it. Phil’s personality has such cynicism. Although he seems self-centered, the viewer gets to understand his personality and what he really wants. Rita is bubbly and fun-loving. Meanwhile, Larry is quirky. If you want to laugh at this hysterical romantic comedy fantasy, look no further. It may help you to appreciate the forward movement of time.

I was not paid to endorse this movie in any way. I borrowed this movie from my local library. The views and opinions that are expressed are my own.
